16-year-old Man Utd wonderkid wins double award, he could be club’s next midfield sensation

Manchester United are a club blessed with young talent right now and one player is making a name for himself ahead of schedule.

The academy at Manchester United has had an absolutely incredible season. Two players from the first squad, Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo, who had won the FA Youth Cup two years prior, scored in the FA Cup Final.

Regarding this year’s young group, the under-18s took home their own treble, winning the Premier League Cup, National League, and Northern League.

With one player already having an impact on both teams, there is a quality squad prepared to advance from the under-16s to the 18s the following season, not content to sit still.

Jim Thwaites wins award double

Right now, there are a lot of players to watch out for in the Manchester United academy. Jim Thwaites, a talented winger, is placing himself at the top of the list.

Thwaites spent the most of this season playing football for Manchester United’s under-16 team, where he started the season.

However, the academy at Manchester United is constantly eager to test and promote talented young players.

At the age of fifteen, Thwaites debuted for the under-18 team in September and went on to make nine appearances in the campaign.

He only made one appearance on the scoreboard, but he made it matter greatly.

Thwaites scored in stoppage time to preserve the team’s undefeated record against Derby County with a stunning long-range strike.

Together with a strike from the youngster that won the under-16 goal of the season—another long-range attempt that went in off the crossbar—this goal was selected the under-18s goal of the season.

Thwaites promises more to come

The young attacking midfielder was delighted to win both awards, and pledges this is just the start for him.

He wrote on Instagram: “Delighted to get both U16 and U18 goal of the season. More to come next season…”

A fresh group of talented players will have their opportunity because many members of the under-18 team that won the title this year are expected to go to the under-21 squad, go on loan, or perhaps play for the first team.

As a player, Thwaites has an advantage over most of his colleagues. In fact, he has already made two fleeting cameos for the under-21 team.

Let’s see what 2024–2025 have in store for him and if his tendency to score amazing goals persists.
