VIDEO: Andre Onana unveils bizarre penalty-saving technique as Man Utd beat Arsenal on spot kicks after pre-season friendly meeting in Los Angeles

WHAT HAPPENED?

Manchester United took an early lead in normal time during their pre-season clash against Arsenal at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, however, goals from Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli meant the Red Devils fell to a 2-1 loss. After full time, the two sides took part in a penalty shootout and Onana saved Kai Havertz’s spot kick. However, when Gabriel Magalhaes stepped up to take his spot kick, the keeper was spotted telling the Brazilian to shoot on his left side and Gabriel obliged, only for Onana to dive the other way.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Onana had also done the same during Arsenal’s first penalty and dove to the left but Fabio Vieira slotted the ball on the other side of the net. Gabriel did not take the Manchester United keeper’s antics lightly, as the Brazilian confronted Onana and told the Cameroonian to stay quiet.

  • WHAT NEXT FOR ONANA?

Onana had a rather topsy-turvy 2023/24 season under Erik ten Hag as the goalkeeper made multiple blunders through the campaign but was also the reason for many games ending in favour of the Red Devils. He will hope to have a better run this time around for the 20-time Premier League champions.
