Manchester United player ratings vs Man City with surprising 7/10 but ‘poor’ 5/10 in shootout defeat – gallery

Man Utd player ratings from the 1-1 Community Shield draw and penalty shootout defeat to Manchester City.

Manchester United were defeated by Man City on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the Community Shield on Saturday afternoon as a late equaliser from Bernardo Silva cancelled out a brilliant goal from Alejandro Garnacho.

Erik ten Hag named a strong side for the Wembley showdown with Lisandro Martinez and Diogo Dalot returning in defence alongside Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire. Bruno Fernandes also returned to the line up with Mason Mount and Amad Diallo selected from the start.

City dominated the match in the early proceedings, though there was a lack of clear opportunities for either side with both attacks clearly lacking sharpness. Oscar Bobb fired an effort well over the bar and James McAtee curled an effort off the post in two good opportunities for City while Marcus Rashford fired well wide in one of few good chances for United.

United were improved after the restart and almost took the lead in spectacular matter when Bruno Fernandes fired in a stunner form outside the box, only for it to be ruled out for offside. In what was a game of few chances, the Portuguese playmaker also had another good opportunity to score when he fired straight at Ederson from the edge of the box and Rashford wasted a glorious opening when he fired against the post after an excellent lay-off from Garnacho.

The Argentine was a constant threat after his introduction from the bench and gave United a deserved lead in the final minutes of the match when he finished low into the bottom corner.

Just when it looked like United were on course to win the game, they switched off defensively as Bernardo Silva headed in at the far-post following an excellent cross from Oscar Bobb to salvage the game and force it to penalties.

Jonny Evans was the unfortunate man to miss the decisive penalty as he blazed over the bar before Manuel Akanji fired in the winner for his side.
