Building back themselves to reach those levels again is a challenge and for some, it never happens.
It looks like it won’t be a challenge for one particular player who left the club this summer and is already thriving in new surroundings.
Mason Greenwood has so far scored in every appearance for Olympique Marseille and he continued that streak on his competitive debut as well.
Mason Greenwood ‘exceptional’ on debut
Olympique Marseille kicked off their league campaign with an away game at Stade Brest on August 17th.
Roberto de Zerbi’s new-look side dismantled the opponents as they ran out 5-1 winners. Greenwood opened the scoring just three minutes into his debut for the team.
He would go on to add another as Luiz Henrique also got a brace in a 5-1 win that catapults Marseille to the top spot in the league for now.
It was Greenwood’s competitive debut for Marseille after he scored on his club debut (friendly) and followed it up with another goal on his next appearance.
De Zerbi called him an “exceptional” player after the game, stoking the flames of controversy in the process by calling out the media.
He said: “Mason Greenwood is just exceptional. He’s an excellent player and you can see that. I’m happy to see him scoring so it will [sic] all the controversy in the media.”
De Zerbi, Greenwood, and effect for Man United
Roberto de Zerbi has been fiercely, and outwardly protective of a player whose career at the top level looked done and dusted at one point.
Greenwood’s footballing abilities were never in question but the door to United was always unlikely to re-open after the circumstances in which he left the club.
Regardless of how well he plays, that will probably remain the case but Ineos have negotiated his sale in such a manner that every goal Greenwood scores will help them.
The 50% sell-on clause is no joke for a player who, if he plays at his peak, could easily start for an absolutely elite club and that is what United have banked their hopes on.
Despite making him one of Manchester United’s best-ever sales, they could easily land double that amount if, in the future, he is sold by Marseille for a humongous fee.
If the first three appearances are any indication, that windfall could come much sooner than expected.
