The 23-year-old will join Noussair Mazraoui, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Joshua Zirkzee through the doors, with United taking their spend beyond £180million this summer. Academy graduate Scott McTominay is closing in on his transfer to Napoli, meanwhile, as question marks surround Jadon Sancho.
Sancho is thought to have Chelsea and Juventus monitoring his situation. United are open to either a permanent sale – or re-sending him out on loan – following a return spell at Borussia Dortmund last season.
As and when he formally leaves, McTominay will free up the No.39 shirt. Ordinarily, that’s not exactly a go-to pick for first-team players, although the No.25 worn by Sancho might catch the eye for possible deadline day signings.
Mazraoui, De Ligt, Yoro and Zirkzee were assigned No.3, No.4, No.15 and No.11 respectively when completing their moves to Old Trafford this summer. However, it’s slim-pickings for anyone else who joins them, between now and 11pm on Friday night, highlighting how far along United are with their squad planning.
As things stand, the shirt numbers available include; No.13, No.19, No.26, No.27, No.28 and No.29. There are also lots of choices in the 30s, 40s and 50s, while departing McTominay and Sancho could vacate their shirt numbers.
