The loss of possession by United midfielders in their own half directly led to all three goals.

At halftime, the Dutch manager removed Casemiro as a way of venting his fury. But Ten Hag trusted academy product Toby Collyer after the break rather than signing Christian Eriksen.

The significant risk in such a tense circumstance demonstrated Eriksen’s decline in the hierarchy. The 86th minute presented the Dane with his chance.

He clearly does not have a long-term future under Ten Hag, and reports suggest Ajax are still eyeing a move for him ahead of Monday’s deadline. The transfer window in the Netherlands is scheduled to shut today.

According to TransferWatch.nl, in the final stages of the window, Ajax are attempting to sign the 32-year-old, who they see as a golden opportunity. It is understood the Dutch giants have been in frequent contact with their former playmaker. However, United’s financial demand is making their pursuit tricky.

However, the report adds Eriksen could still yet return to Amsterdam as the Red Devils continue to explore the market for a new midfielder.

It is believed they are looking to sign Rabiot. The Frenchman is available on a free transfer after leaving Juventus earlier this summer.

Since he is a free agent, United can sign him despite the close of the summer transfer window in England.

United’s midfielders struggled against Liverpool’s intense pressing and were often comfortably outmuscled on Sunday.

In that regard, Rabiot could prove to be a shrewd late addition to their ranks, as not only does he offer technical security in possession but he also has the physicality to both recover the possession and shield the ball effectively.

Earlier this summer, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming Rabiot’s representatives are demanding €10 million a year in wages for his services. It remains to be seen if INEOS agree to such a hefty ask
