Paul Scholes has suggested that Ruud van Nistelrooy should have had more influence over Manchester United’s recent forward transfers, implying that the Dutchman might not have opted to bring in Joshua Zirkzee in the summer.
United have been struggling for goals this season, with only Southampton netting fewer than Erik ten Hag’s team in the league to date. The manager’s plans were disrupted when Rasmus Hojlund sustained a hamstring injury during pre-season, limiting the Dane to brief substitute appearances in United’s last two matches.Zirkzee joined Old Trafford from Bologna in a deal worth £36.5million and scored on his league debut against Fulham on the first day of the season. However, injuries have led him to start United’s last four games, but the Netherlands international hasn’t found the back of the net since.
Scholes, who was part of the SuperSport punditry team for United’s disappointing 3-0 loss to Tottenham on Sunday, said: “Coaches are control freaks, they want to do everything. If you were Ruud watching that, he is maybe thinking, ‘I will take a back seat, I don’t want to get involved in that.'”
He added: “He also has to be involved in the recruitment side of it, signing a centre forward. Or two centre forwards. ‘Ruud, who do you think?’
