Dustin Johnson, a prominent figure in the golfing world and a former Masters champion, is set to take an extended break from tournament play, choosing to remain loyal to LIV Golf after his controversial departure from the PGA Tour in 2022. At 37 years old, Johnson’s decision to limit his schedule starkly contrasts with the approach taken by fellow golfers, including Jon Rahm, who are actively competing on various tours as they prepare for major tournaments.
After joining LIV Golf, Johnson severed all ties with the PGA Tour, effectively ending a notable 15-year career on the traditional circuit. This transition has allowed him to focus primarily on LIV competitions, leading to a unique calendar that revolves around the tour’s offerings while excluding regular participation in the PGA events. Johnson will not return to the golf course until February 2025, as LIV Golf allows its players a generous five-month offseason before the season kicks off in Riyadh.
In a candid moment captured by Netflix’s docu-series Full Swing, Johnson expressed his motivation for joining LIV Golf. He pointed out the appeal of playing less while earning more, saying, “Pretty simple. Someone offers anyone a job, doing the same thing they’re already doing but less time at the office and they’re gonna pay them more. Pretty sure you’re gonna take it. And something’s wrong with you if you didn’t.” This philosophy reflects a growing trend among players prioritizing work-life balance and financial stability in a sport traditionally known for its rigorous schedule.
In stark contrast, several of Johnson’s LIV counterparts are embracing a more active approach to the 2024 season. While Johnson will be absent from competitive play, players like Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton are busy competing on the DP World Tour, balancing their commitments with the need to maintain their memberships and eligibility for prestigious events, including the Ryder Cup. Rahm and Hatton, in particular, have become regulars on the European tour, engaging in crucial tournaments as they aim to fulfill their obligations before the year’s end.
