He was the reason I was boarded, as evidenced by his performance yesterday. He was playing against me when I was there, and now he is suddenly getting the Man of the Match award, which indicates that he didn’t wish me well when I was there. Erik Ten Hag identifies the ONE Man United player responsible for his dismissal. nor Rashford, nor Casemiro

Diogo Dalot believes Manchester United’s players had ‘more determination’ to take their chances than they had previously after beating Leicester City 5-2 in the Carabao Cup at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Under the stewardship of interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy for the first time, United progressed to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals with a comprehensive win over Steve Cooper’s side.

United found themselves 4-2 ahead at half-time, inspired by goals from Casemiro (2), Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho. Casemiro opened the scoring with a stunning effort from distance.

Fernandes, who netted a deflected free-kick prior to the interval, scored United’s fifth goal of the evening to put the contest beyond doubt with 59 minutes on the clock, smashing the ball home from close range after rounding goalkeeper Danny Ward.

And for Dalot, who claimed the assist for Garnacho to score United’s second goal of the night, he and his teammates expressed a feeling of determination inside the final third to ensure they made a winning start to life under Van Nistelrooy.

“I think it was the message that we wanted to send after a defeat and a tough week,” Dalot told MUTV. “That was the minimum that we could show for ourselves and for our fans.

“I think they enjoyed tonight and we did as well. We scored a lot of goals, some good goals, and it was a good night at Old Trafford.”

Dalot, who was guilty of squandering a golden opportunity in United’s 2-1 defeat to West Ham United last Sunday, knows that wasted chances have been the story of United’s campaign so far

He continued: “I think that summarised a little bit of this season. We were creating enough to score and win games; the difference was we probably had a little bit more determination inside the final third, believing that we were going to score.

“I think there was confidence that we were going to score. Today, I think Cas’ goal breaks a little bit of that.

“We scored some good goals and overall it was a good match. We still had two goals that we conceded that we should avoid, but overall it was a good night for us and we are though.”
