Manchester United fans will be forced to wait nearly a month for Ruben Amorim’s first game in charge.
The Red Devils reached a full agreement with Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday, having identified Amorim, 39, as their top pick to replace Erik ten Hag. United executives pulled the trigger and sacked Ten Hag on Monday following a dismal start to the season which leaves them languishing 14th in the Premier League table.
Ruud van Nistelrooy has been appointed caretaker manager and oversaw United’s swashbuckling 5-2 win at home to Leicester City in the Carabao Cup. It was hoped that Amorim would be in the dugout or at least watching from the stands on Sunday when the Red Devils host Chelsea, but Van Nistelrooy’s services will be required for three more games.
