‘I have to point to them’ – Gary Neville slams two Man United players who must ‘do more’

Gary Neville has reluctantly attacked Manchester United duo Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho over their work ethic as part of the team.

A student of Sir Alex Ferguson and part of a Unitedteam used to fighting as a unit for league titles, Neville has rarely been impressed by a modern-day team that looks a shadow of the one he played for.

“United, more of the same. Disjointed and not really a style of play. Things you can buy into or like, there’s bits, but you’d expect that from a team that has had that much money spent on it – that players are going to give you a combination or a little bit of skill,” he said in review of Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea on The Gary Neville podcast.

“But I have to say, at times they look as though they’ve never trained with each other. Some of the passing and some of the play is really woeful.”

The club’s former captain had been providing commentary for Sky Sports at Old Trafford. Even though they were only under the instruction of interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, Neville felt there was something drastically wrong with the performances of the two wingers.

On a later tangent, he added: “I’m not gonna dig Rashford and Garnacho out, but I am, because they’re two players who have come through the ranks. I think that comes with some credit – you’re an academy player and you get a level of buy-in from the fans because of that, there is an enthusiasm towards them

“They’ve been in the team now, Rashford for a good few years and Garnacho a couple of years or so, but when I watch [Bukayo] Saka, [Leandro] Trossard and [Gabriel] Martinelli [for Arsenal], I watch Bernardo Silva and [Phil] Foden for City or I watch players at Liverpool. I watch them all scurrying back, harassing and doubling up with real intent.

“I’ve just watched [Malo] Gusto run forward there on that far side during the first half and couldn’t believe how much space he gets. The first ethic is that you have to work hard.”
