Ruben Amorim must waste no time in putting down two important markers at Old Trafford after he leaves Sporting CP and arrives at Manchester United.

That is according to former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov, who believes that Ruben Amorim faces a tough task ahead of him at the Red Devils.

Former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag was axed as United manager last week after the Premier League club’s disappointing start to the 2024-25 campaign.

Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was part of Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff, was installed as United interim manager amid the Red Devils’ pursuit of Sporting CP boss Amorim.

United triggered the £9.25m release clause in Amorim’s Sporting CP contract and the 39-year-old Portuguese manager agreed to move to Old Trafford.

Amorim has inked a contract until June 2027 to succeed Ten Hag as United manager and will start at the Premier League club from 11th November.

Berbatov talks Amorim and Man Utd
Manchester United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy will see out the rest of his tenure as interim boss and his last match in charge will be against Leicester City on Sunday.

MORE UNITED STORIES
Van Nistelrooy is expected to depart Old Trafford after Sunday’s Premier League clash, with Ruben Amorim bringing in his own coaching staff to the Red Devils.

Amorim’s first match in charge of the Red Devils will be after the November international break against Premier League side Ipswich Town.

Speaking to The Daily Mirror, Dimitar Berbatov has claimed that Amorim is “probably assessing” the current United players and the “situation” at the club.

The 43-year-old United cult hero added that the Sporting CP manager must ensure he is “really strict” at the club and “assert” his “authority” with the players.

“Coming in, he’s probably assessing the players and assessing the situation,” he said.

“He needs to be really strict with what he would like to do, and assert his authority and put in his principles of ‘Look, this is how we’re going to play, this is how we’re going to build our way of playing.’”

Berbatov says Amorim must ‘answer’ questions
Amorim has been tipped to change up United’s playing style after his arrival at Old Trafford, including the possibility of playing a three-man backline.

Berbatov insisted that the incoming United manager will need “time” and could require the transfer window to bring in the type of player he needs for his formation.

The former Bulgaria striker also claimed that there are several “questions” that are lingering around United and only Amorim is the one “who needs to answer” them.

“So, United will have a face and everybody will know how you approach the game,” Berbatov added.

“Of course, this is going to take time. If the players in this current team are not good enough to play in his system, then probably he will need to wait for the transfer window to see what type of player he is going to bring in.

“Is he going to bring anyone in at all, or maybe he’s going to be happy with the players he has at his disposal right now?

“So, again, as I said before – questions, questions, questions, and the only one who needs to answer is him.”
