Ruben Amorim’s five-word demand in first meeting with Man Utd players speaks volumes

Ruben Amorim has told his Manchester United players his first demand since being appointed as Erik ten Hag’s successor.

The 39-year-old head coach told his team: “We have to have fun.” Speaking to a small group of United’s stars who remained at Carrington during the international break, Amorim also noted he was ‘thrilled’ to have arrived at Old Trafford.

After being announced as Ten Hag’s replacement on November 1, Amorim served a notice period with Sporting Lisbon, and even recorded a win over Manchester City. The ex-Portugal midfielder arrived in Manchester for the first time on Monday, joined by members of his coaching staff.

Tuesday saw Amorim meet five players for the first time: Luke ShawMason MountKobbie Mainoo, Lenny Yoro and Toby Collyer. He also met with academy youngsters who have trained with the first team including Daniel Armer, Amir Ibragimov and Ruben Curley.

Amorim has not immediately been able to take training with United as he waits for his visa but he has undertaken a number of meetings. That has included being welcomed by chief executive Omar Berrada, sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox.

Amorim also met members of coaching staff on Tuesday, with Andreas Georgson and Darren Fletcher remaining following the exits of Ten Hag and Ruud van Nistelrooy. Rene Hake, Jelle ten Rouwelaar and Pieter Morel have all been confirmed as departing the club.

The new Red Devils boss is already said to have made some early judgements on his squad. Mason Mount has been earmarked for a significant role under Amorim despite his difficult time since joining from Chelsea.
