Ed Sheeran has broken his silence after gatecrashing Ruben Amorim’s post-match interview with Sky Sports on Sunday.
Amorim took charge of Manchester United for the first time at Portman Road, where newly promoted Ipswich held them to a 1-1 draw after Omari Hutchinson’s strike cancelled out Marcus Rashford‘s opener after 80 seconds.
Global music star Sheeran, who is a huge Ipswich fan and sponsors the club’s shirts, was in attendance for the game but courted controversy for what he did afterwards.
Sheeran interrupted Amorim’s chat with Sky Sports to speak to Jamie Redknapp live on air, with the Portuguese looking less than pleased.
As Sheeran embraced Redknapp, presenter Kelly Cates said, “Ed Sheeran has come to join us, we’re just chatting to Ruben Amorim.”
Sheeran then replied, “I don’t think he (Ruben Amorim) wants to speak to me” before adding that he loves being back in the Premier League and heading out of shot.
The 33-year-old was widely criticised for the awkward moment and on Monday, took to Instagram to address the matter and issue an apology.
On his story, he wrote: “Apologies if I offended Amorim yesterday, didn’t actually realise he was being interviewed at the time, was popping to say hi and bye to Jamie. Obvz feel a bit of a b*****d but life goes on. Great game though, congrats on all involved x.”
