Wolves then ran clear in stoppage time once United had committed players forward, and Cunha unselfishly squared the ball to Hwang for a simple finish past Andre Onana.
Despite United’s poor performance at Wolves, the result may have different had Fernandes not been shown a second yellow card for an ankle-high foul in the second half.
It is the third time the United captain has seen red this season, although his sending off against Tottenham was overturned on appeal.
And Amorim’s reaction to the decision spoke volumes.
As Fernandes was leaving the pitch, Amorim was passing on tactical instructions to his players. But as his captain approached, Amorim looked away in disgust and refused to acknowledge Fernandes at all.
Fernandes will only miss one game for United as a result of receiving two yellow cards, meaning he will be unavailable for the home fixture against Newcastle on December 30.
He will be back in contention for the away trip to Liverpool on January 5.
When asked about the sending off after the game, Amorim made his feelings clear when speaking to Amazon Prime: “Yes, of course [he should have been more careful while on a yellow card]. It’s so hard to win games in this league with 11 men, with 10 men it’s even more difficult. So we have to focus on that.”
