Manchester United fans have been quick to notice Marcus Rashford’s reaction to the news that Tyrell Malacia would be leaving the club on loan.
Malacia, who joined United from Feyenoord for a reported £13m in 2022, has had a difficult time at Old Trafford, struggling with both fitness issues and a lack of form. After undergoing knee surgery in the summer of 2023, he was sidelined for approximately 17 months, with setbacks delaying his recovery process.
When Malacia eventually made his return to action, it was clear that securing a regular starting spot was going to be a challenge under United’s new head coach, Ruben Amorim. This season, he has only managed eight first-team appearances, most of which were as a substitute.
United made a significant move in the winter transfer window by signing Patrick Dorgu from Lecce for £25m, a move that seemed to further limit Malacia’s chances of securing a starting role at left-back. As a result, the club made the decision to allow Malacia to return to the Netherlands, where he has joined PSV Eindhoven on loan until the end of the season.
The move was confirmed by both Manchester United and PSV, with the Dutch club posting a picture of Malacia in their kit on Instagram, welcoming him back to the Eredivisie. The caption read: “Welcome to Eindhoven, Tyrell.”
While Rashford’s reaction was more subtle than others might expect, it was still noticed by fans. As teammates move on, it’s always interesting to see how those left behind feel about changes in the squad. Malacia’s departure represents another shift in the team as Amorim looks to reshape the squad and ensure that only those who are fully ready to contribute to his system remain part of the first team.
