That’s because the 30-year-old, who has already been sent off two other times this season, saw a previous red card against Tottenham earlier in the season overturned, meaning there will be no additional matches added to his suspension.
The Manchester United captain was shown two yellow cards in the 2-0 loss against Wolves on Boxing Day. But even though the Portugal star seemed shocked when referee Tony Harrington gave him his marching orders following a high boot on Nelson Semedo, he can have few complaints.
Ruben Amorim did not appear to acknowledge Fernandes as he trudged off the pitch – and United’s head coach bemoaned his sending off after the game.
“I think he cannot go to the ball,” Amorim said when asked about the incident by Prime Video.
“He’s trying to reach the ball and some guys are not even looking at the ball but I don’t want to focus on that. I think the good thing is we were near the goal, even with 10 men. That is a good thing, but we lost.”
He added: “It’s so tough to win games in this league with 11 men. With 10 men, it’s more difficult. We have to focus on that.”
