United licking their lips as Greenwood’s sell-on clause set to skyrocket – report

Mason Greenwood’s fast start to his debut season at Olympique de Marseille has attracted the interest of some of Europe’s biggest names.

After bagging five goals in his first four league games, HITC claim that Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are keeping tabs on the former Manchester United forward.

What’s more, the report suggests that both the Spanish giants considered a swoop for the Englishman last summer but ended up focusing on other priorities.

Greenwood’s last appearance for United was in January 2022, when he was arrested and later charged with attempted rape, one count of controlling and coercive behaviour and one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He spent last season on loan at Getafe, scoring eight times in 33 matches, and despite rumours that the Reds would bring him back into the fold he was ultimately sold to Marseille in a deal worth up to £26.6m.

In today’s market that is a snip for a supremely talented young player, but United made the deal with one eye on his progression and will be pleased to see other clubs already circling.

It is understood that the sale included a sell-on percentage clause of around 50% of any future profit.

Greenwood is just a couple of months into a five-year contract with the French club, so would command a tremendous fee should he move on this summer.

The 22-year-old’s transfer was met with some resistance in Marseille when it went through earlier this year, with some fans protesting the signing and the mayor of the city condemning it as a “disgrace”.

Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi, though, is very happy with Greenwood’s goals and attitude so far.

“Greenwood is simply exceptional. He is an excellent player, and it shows. I am happy to see him score to put an end to all the controversy in the media,” the former Brighton and Hove Albion manager said last month, as per HITC.

“How far can Mason Greenwood go with me? I don’t know. He has to keep training like he does. Mason Greenwood is a serious boy, and we are all satisfied with him as a player, and as a person. He has a huge margin of improvement.”
