Manchester United’s Striking Dilemma: Zirkzee, Højlund, and Limited Options in Attack
Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Højlund have struggled to find the back of the net for Manchester United this season, leaving Ruben Amorim with growing concerns over his attacking options. Zirkzee, who made the move from Bayern Munich in the summer, has found the net just four times in 35 appearances. Meanwhile, Højlund, despite being seen as a potential future star, has failed to score in his last 13 matches, highlighting his struggles to adapt to the Premier League.
With Marcus Rashford sealing a loan move to Aston Villa, Amorim is now left with limited attacking firepower. The loss of Rashford, who has been a key figure for United, further exacerbates the club’s striking crisis. Currently, Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo are the only remaining players in the squad offering goalscoring potential. Fortunately for United, Garnacho remained at the club despite significant interest from other teams, which has offered a temporary sense of relief to Amorim.
In an attempt to bolster the squad, INEOS made late deadline-day attempts to sign Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich, but their efforts were unsuccessful. Additionally, loan moves for Leon Bailey of Aston Villa and Christopher Nkunku of Chelsea also failed to materialize, leaving United to reconsider their options for attacking reinforcements.
As it stands, United‘s striking issues have not been addressed in the winter window, and Amorim will need to find solutions within his current squad or look towards the summer for a potential signing. If the Red Devils are to challenge for top honors this season, Højlund and Zirkzee will need to rediscover their scoring touch, while Garnacho and Diallo will also be expected to step up. If these struggles persist, the club will likely face more pressing questions about their attacking depth heading into the summer transfer window.
