Man Utd vetoed Jose Mourinho’s three-man wishlist before suffering ‘worst transfer window’ in club’s history

Manchester United’s Disastrous Transfer Window Under Mourinho’s Reign: A Tale of Unmet Expectations

Manchester United’s handling of their transfer windows has often been a topic of intense debate, with many pointing to the summer of 2018 as one of the club’s most disappointing in recent history. After finishing second in the Premier League under Jose Mourinho, the expectations were high for the club to reinforce their squad with key signings. However, the window ended with what many have called a “disastrous” set of arrivals.

The response to this year’s lackluster January transfer window, which saw Ayden Heaven and Patrick Dorgu come in, reignited the conversation about United’s past transfer failures. The most notable comment on this debate came from the @AmorimEra account on X (formerly Twitter), which reminded fans of how Mourinho had finished second and was then rewarded with the arrivals of Lee Grant, Diogo Dalot, and Fred. These players, while they had some impact, hardly lived up to the expectations of a club looking to challenge for the Premier League title.

After completing the signings of Dalot and Fred from Porto and Shakhtar Donetsk, respectively, Mourinho had requested additional signings to strengthen his squad. He was clear in his desire for a right-sided attacker, a centre-back, and a striker—key areas that were identified as essential to improving the squad for the following season.

However, those requests went unheeded, leaving Mourinho to work with a squad that many believed wasn’t strong enough to challenge for major honors. Dalot has remained a first-team regular under Ruben Amorim, though his performances have been inconsistent at times. Fred, on the other hand, was offloaded to Fenerbahce in the summer of 2023 for a mere £12.9 million, marking a disappointing chapter for a player who failed to meet expectations in his time at United.

As United continue to assess their transfer strategy, the shadow of that fateful summer transfer window under Mourinho looms large. The failure to fulfill the manager’s wishlist at the time has often been cited as one of the key reasons why the club’s subsequent seasons faltered, and it remains a cautionary tale for those currently steering the ship at Old Trafford.
