“Awful the entire match” – Gary Lineker drops verdict on Man Utd teenager after Arsenal defeat

Alejandro Garnacho, a teenage player for Manchester United, received criticism from Gary Lineker for his final ball against Arsenal on Sunday, calling it “awful.” Alongside Amad Diallo, the 19-year-old was the most promising player in the attack, but he was unable to turn opportunities into goals as the Gunners won by a slim 1-0 margin at Old Trafford.

On Sunday, Manchester United outpossessed and had more shots than Arsenal, but they lacked confidence in front of goal, with David Raya looking unthreatening in goal.

With a game remaining, Manchester City sits in second position in the league, while Arsenal took the lead once again after their triumph.

Lineker: Garnacho’s Final Ball was ‘Awful’

With two games remaining, Manchester United’s loss drops them to eighth place in the Premier League, three points behind sixth-place Newcastle.

Fans currently anticipate that most players, including Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes, will be eligible for the FA Cup final matchup against Manchester City on May 25. Erik ten Hag fielded a weak team against Arsenal.

Speaking on his podcast, The Rest Is Football, Lineker said the Premier League title race could have been over on Sunday:

“Arsenal went there, it’s not a place where they’ve been particularly successful the last decade or so. All they would have cared about at this stage was that they had to get that win come what may. There was a degree of caution to the game that, I was thinking, ‘God, they might pay for this, you know’.

“Garnacho was a threat, but his final ball was awful the entire match, I thought. I mean, he’s dangerous and all it needed was, you know, one where he cuts in and could conceivably bend one in the top corner and then all of a sudden the title race is pretty much done really.”

This season, Garnacho has solidified his place in Ten Hag’s starting eleven. The Argentinean winger has seven goals and four assists in 34 Premier League outings this campaign, averaging a goal every 344 minutes.

Old Trafford may undergo significant changes in the upcoming transfer window as players like Anthony Martial, Raphael Varane, and Casemiro are expected to depart. While Varane and Martial have contracts that are about to expire and are unlikely to be renewed beyond the current season, the Brazilian is expected to draw interest from Saudi Arabian teams.

According to a recent article by The Telegraph, Garnacho, Kobbie Mainoo, and Rasmus Hojlund are the only three Manchester United players who are guaranteed to stay in the team next season. The current team has struggled this season, with Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes being two of the biggest disappointments. As a result, the club intends to build around the three young players.

Manchester United has lost more games in a Premier League season than any other in the team’s history, therefore manager Erik Ten Hag’s future is also in doubt. The club’s new minority owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, is set to make major roster changes in the summer.
