According to Portuguese daily Record, Benfica is considering making an unexpected move this summer to sign Mason Greenwood, a winger for Manchester United.

Greenwood played 36 games in all competitions while on loan at Getafe, where he finished with 10 goals and 6 assists.

As a result, the Spanish team awarded him Player of the Year, but it is unlikely that the Red Devils will think about keeping him on loan for another campaign.

United need to recoup funds to increase their spending power and Record (page 10) claim that Benfica are prepared to attack for Greenwood’s signature.

It is added that he is valued at £13 million (likely Transfermarkt value) and Benfica prefer to discuss the move separately without any player involved.

United will be eyeing higher fee for Greenwood

Greenwood’s departure from the Red Devils seems imminent, as the team has made it obvious that he will no longer be playing for them.

Benfica and United have already conducted business thanks to Alvaro Fernandez’s recent transfer. They activated a £5 million upfront buy option under his loan agreement.

If the Portuguese company puts forward a comparable offer, we won’t be shocked. They might suggest that Greenwood be signed to a loan with a buyout option attached.

United, though, will undoubtedly demand more from the agreement. Greenwood can be a versatile player on the offensive line. Last semester, he contributed 16 goals.

The hierarchy would surely want at least £25m to consider his exit and they will be hoping for more competition. A permanent transfer could be preferred too.
