Benfica starlet rejects contract offer after Manchester United bid gets turned down

Portugal international Joao Neves has turned down Benfica’s offer of a new contract amid interest from Manchester United.

This summer, United wants to bolster their midfield, and one player they have their eye on is Joao Neves.

Though, considering United’s current financial constraints, signing the Benfica star would be a very costly move.

Before they can add players to the roster, such as new signings, the Reds must sell players. Neves, 19, is thought to be Casemiro’s replacement.

The Brazilian is probably going to leave Old Trafford before the new season begins, but United hasn’t decided who they want to take his position.

According to Record, there were rumours last week that Benfica quickly rejected a £51 million offer from United.

The issue for United is that Neves’ contract includes a £105 million release clause—the same amount Chelsea was compelled to pay Enzo Fernandez eighteen months earlier by Benfica.

According to The Metro, there are currently rumours that Neves rejected a contract offer from Benfica. Neves is thought to have piqued the interest of Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Man City.

Although United is reportedly showing the greatest interest, I don’t see the team going over budget for players this summer and making the same mistakes it has in the past.

Neves hoping to star at Euro 2024

Neves will join Manchester United duo Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot in the Portugal squad for the upcoming European Championships.

United captain Fernandes went on record in March tipping Neves to thrive in the Premier League.

Fernandes said: “I don’t know if United rumours are true, but I know he is ready for that big jump.

“He is an excellent player, he’s with the National team. That’s also why the big clubs are after him.”

Neves broke into the Benfica first team and Fernandez’s replacement. Could he do the same at United if Casemiro leaves?
