Cristiano Ronaldo in tears after Portugal penalty miss as Man United players comfort distraught star

Cristiano Ronaldo was left in tears after missing a penalty for Portugal during extra-time against Slovenia. The former Manchester United forward saw his spot-kick saved by Jan Oblak just before half-time in extra-time of the Euro 2024 last-16 clash.

Having had an individual battle with Oblak throughout the game up to 105 minutes, Ronaldo was unable to control his emotions and had to be consoled by his teammates during the break. United defender Diogo Dalot was one of those who went to comfort Ronaldo as he was left distraught at missing the game’s biggest chance.

Liverpool star Diogo Jota also consoled him, then Dalot had his arm around him in the huddle while he wept and then spoke to him and kissed him as they headed back to their positions. Bruno Fernandes was talking to Ronaldo as the Portugal camp looked to get themselves together for the final 15 minutes of the match.

With no way past Oblak and a stubborn Slovenia side up to that point, Roberto Martinez’s side looked to be heading to penalties.

Ronaldo, who scored 58 times in his first season at Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr, had been peppering the Slovenia goal throughout the match including from a series of increasingly ambitious free-kicks. In the second half his best effort of the game came from a left-footed shot that was only directed straight at the Atletico Madrid ‘keeper.

The 39-year-old had failed to score in any of Portugal’s three group games as well. He also started the final game against Georgia despite there being little to play for.
