Deal close: Man Utd “hopeful” of winning race to sign new “highly-rated” gem after tabling offer

As Sir Jim Ratcliffe looks to make his mark on the current Manchester United, the Red Devils have reportedly tabled an offer to sign a possible future star for Erik ten Hagthis summer.

Man Utd transfer news

With even Ten Hag’s future still up in the air, it’s obvious that there will be a lot of work to be done at Old Trafford this summer. The FA Cup victory against rivals Manchester City by the Dutchman salvaged the season, but as Ratcliffe considers his options, connections with players like Gareth Southgate and Thomas Tuchel continue to surface.

Outside of the dugout, the focus of the headlines has been United’s pursuit of a replacement for Raphael Varane. After the season ended, the Frenchman announced his departure, and ever then, names like Ousmane Diomande and Antonio Silva have been connected to those at Old Trafford. It appears that Ratcliffe’s purportedly new transfer policy is already in action, as he has added two young defenders.

It appears that this policy will continue to be pursued in an effort to find another fresh genius. The Manchester Evening News claims that after making an offer to the teenage right-back, Manchester United is “hopeful” to win the competition to recruit James Overy. United is trying to finalise a deal that will see Ten Hag land a future star in the coming months, with an agreement and transfer believed to be close. They are offering the 17-year-old a scholarship to attend their renowned academy. If anything good came out of Old Trafford this season, it was the development of Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo, who went from the academy to become first-team regulars. Overy may now be able to follow their route if he closes a deal to join Manchester United this summer.

“Highly-rated” Overy can follow Mainoo path

The one thing that has never changed at United is how they make use of their academy, regardless of their level of success on the pitch. In the past, the Red Devils have looked to their own, whether it was Wayne Rooney or Paul Scholes, or Mainoo, Garnacho, and Marcus Rashford currently. Overy may now aim to follow a comparable route from the academy to the starting squad.

The young player originally drew the attention of Premier League teams during a Perth Glory friendly match against West Ham United last summer, and it appears that since coming to England to join the first squad of Newton Abbot Spurs, the interest in him has only grown.

He’s earned plenty of praise during the last year too, including from ExWHUEmployee, who told The West Ham Way when speaking about the Hammers’ potential move last year: “I have been told by my sources that James Overy is currently on trial with our Academy. He is a highly rated right-back who impressed when playing against us for Perth Glory during our pre-season tour.”

With the London club failing to seal their deal to sign Overy, however, United have reportedly swooped in to potentially welcome Overy in the coming months.
