“Depressed” – Mark Goldbridge stunned after hearing manager Man Utd could now appoint

England manager Gareth Southgate, according to Manchester United supporter and United Stand host Mark Goldbridge, would be a dismal addition to the Old Trafford staff.

If Erik ten Hag were to depart his position as United’s manager this summer, Southgate is one of the possible candidates to succeed him. Week by week, Ten Hag’s future appears less and less certain as United drags into the last stretch of a campaign that might see them finish outside of the European positions.

United has only won once in eight games since their thrilling FA Cup victory over Liverpool in March, which sent them to back-to-back finals; the other five have ended in draws and two losses.

Man Utd have reportedly opened talks with the Three Lions boss

Reports indicate that plans are already underway regarding Southgate’s potential transfer to United, and the rumors are getting stronger. According to FootMercato, Southgate is the Red Devils’ first pick to succeed Ten Hag. They will probably formally submit their bid after the 2024 European Championship.

As Ten Hag’s second season at Old Trafford draws to an end—which will happen after the FA Cup final versus Manchester City—new names for his position are starting to surface, as minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe appears eager to make a move. It has not gone over well with some supporters that Southgate is the front-runner for a possible managerial change after an essentially successful tenure as England’s manager.

Gareth Southgate Appointment Labelled ‘Depressing’

Mark Goldbridge has been against the club making a move for Southgate

Following the news that Southgate could be the next in line for the Man Utd job, the United Stand presenter Mark Goldbridge wrote on social media:

“Cannot express how depressed this would make me feel.”

Southgate guided England to three major tournament victories after being promoted to the senior squad after rising through the ranks with the Young Lions. Southgate has brought England further than they had done in years, even though they haven’t quite been able to cross the finish line in any of them. He even helped put an end to England’s terrible penalty history. In 2018, he guided Harry Kane and company to the World Cup semi-finals for the first time since Italia ’90.

After overcoming the disappointment of his missed penalty kick against Germany three years prior, in 2021, Southgate led England to their first-ever berth in the European Final at Wembley Stadium. Though England had the early advantage, they lost to Italy, which sparked debate about the manager’s suitability to head the national team. A lot of people criticize Southgate for his style of play, the teams he chooses, and his inability to win key tournament matches against elite nations.

Man United Face Tough end to the Season

They have slipped to eighth position in the Premier League and face league leaders Arsenal next before hosting European-chasing Newcastle United at Old Trafford. They travel to Brighton on the final day of the season and with West Ham breathing down their necks, the right results could see United finish in an astonishing ninth place, a far cry from their glory days under the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson.
