Emotional Ruben Amorim sends Man United next manager message as doubts emerge

Ruben Amorim acknowledged that his future at Sporting Clube de Portugal was uncertain because of his connections to Manchester United.

During his stellar career in Portugal, the highly sought-after manager has been linked to prestigious positions at West Ham, Liverpool, and Chelsea. Sporting has won the league twice under his leadership in the last four years.

With Erik ten Hag’s poor performance in his second season as manager, United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe may be looking to replace him this summer. The Red Devils could miss out on playing in Europe the following season because they are now ranked ninth in the standings.

Amorim later acknowledged that the timing of his travel to London was incorrect. Amorim held talks with West Ham in London last month. After Sporting’s victory over Estoril on Saturday, he was asked about his future and, although he had some reservations at first, he insisted he wouldn’t be taking another plane to England.

He told A Bola: “This is the place where I’ve been the happiest, where I’ve felt the most fulfilled professionally, let’s say. I want to continue here and there are rumours but I certainly won’t be catching another plane to England. What changed is that I’ve learned that it’s not worth saying whether something will happen or not.

“I am under contract and we don’t know what tomorrow will bring but I learned that I was the one that created this [rumours] with it being the first season in which I had doubts [over his future]. If I didn’t win [the league], I would leave but now, having won it, you question ‘what if it goes wrong?’

“I’ve learned, I’m young and I make mistakes. People say I communicate well but I must be much better in this regard, as I have a lot of responsibilities here and I create this doubt that might not help.

“I have always been happy here, it was the first year that I questioned whether it was time to leave but I have since learned not to put pressure on things and whatever has to happen, will happen. We are planning next season and I’m going to let life happen. I am under contract with Sporting, nothing has changed and I’ll let you know when there’s anything new.”
