Exclusive – Sir Alex Ferguson pressing for candidate to take charge of Manchester United as Erik ten Hag replacement

HITC sources can confirm that Manchester United have spoken to Thomas Tuchel, Roberto De Zerbi and Mauricio Pochettino as they continue to check on possible replacements for Erik Ten Hag.

It has been reported that Sir Jim Ratcliffe has had direct communication with Tuchel; HITC can verify that De Zerbi and Pochettino’s camps have also been contacted.

Ten Hag is still in the dark about whether he will stay in charge at Old Trafford since United has not yet disclosed the results of their end-of-season evaluation.

Though negotiations with other options have been ongoing in recent weeks, United sources claim that no decision has been taken about the Dutchman.

Sir Alex Ferguson wants Mauricio Pochettino to get Old Trafford job

Mauricio Pochettino is one of those alternatives, in fact, and he has been brought in at the request of Sir Alex Ferguson, the iconic former manager of United, who has the ear of Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the minority owner.

Ferguson and Pochettino are tight, and HITC has been informed that Ferguson will keep pushing for the Argentine to be given the opportunity to lead the team after Ten Hag was chosen over Ferguson for the United position in 2022.

Although Pochettino only left Chelsea at the end of the previous season, HITC knows Manchester United is interested in him. Sources close to the former Southampton and Tottenham manager have revealed to us that he has made it known he is ready to return to management.

Pochettino spent last weekend managing the rest of the world XI in the SoccerAid charity match which took place at Stamford Bridge, and he admitted that he was open about what the future held for him.

“In football you never know, things can happen – today, nothing but tomorrow can appear and any opportunity, we are open to listen,” he told TalkSport.

Thomas Tuchel and Roberto De Zerbi spoken to by Man United

Although HITC can confirm that Thomas Tuchel, who left Bayern Munich last month, had a conversation with Sir Jim Ratcliffe, he will not be leading United.

According to people close to Tuchel’s camp, he intends to take a summer hiatus from football. Meanwhile, United has refuted rumours that he was the front-runner for the position, citing the fact that negotiations were clearly still going on with other applicants.

In fact, HITC has learned that United is showing interest in former Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi. The Italian, who left Brighton at the end of the season, is a free agent and is reportedly eager to remain in the Premier League.

In addition to Pochettino, Graham Potter, a former Chelsea manager, is still interested in taking over for Ten Hag, and the club still has supporters for Thomas Frank of Brentford.

The England manager, Gareth Southgate, is still considered by the football department of the club to be the “best fit” for the team going forward, HITC is informed.

Ratcliffe, the minority owner who spoke with Tuchel, will ultimately decide on the United manager position, but he will rely largely on his football department, which is headed by Jean-Claude Blanc and Sir Dave Brailsford, two of his most trusted INEOS employees who are also board members at Old Trafford.
