‘I love that’: Alan Shearer blown away by what one Manchester United player did to Erling Haaland at Wembley

One Manchester United player is earning rave reviews for his performance against Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

The Red Devils were the underdogs going into the contest. Erik ten Hag’s team won the FA Cup with a well-earned victory, despite the fact that nobody really gave them a chance.

Shearer was astounded by one specific young player’s performance against Erling Haaland, but many Manchester United players deserve credit for their efforts on the day.

Alan Shearer raves about what Kobbie Mainoo did to Erling Haaland

At Wembley, Kobbie Mainoo stole the show for Manchester United.

The teenager’s 2023–2024 campaign was outstanding. Although he had already given some outstanding performances, his effort at Wembley against the world’s top team was truly remarkable.

Among superstars like Kevin De Bruyne and Rodri, Mainoo was the standout player when he first debuted in the middle of the park.

He was by far the superior player that day, and he even contributed to his team’s historic win by getting on the scoresheet.

Alan Shearer had the responsibility of selecting the Player of the Match winner while serving as a co-commentator at Wembley.

The Premier League legend picked Mainoo without any hesitation, and he has now revealed a key reason why the youngster was his choice for the award.

Shearer claimed that he loved how Mainoo went ‘body-to-body’ against Erling Haaland, who’s much bigger than him, and still held his own.

He said on The Rest is Football podcast: “When you consider he’s up against someone who we consider the best in the world, Rodri; Kevin De Bruyne, one of the best in the world; Foden, one of the best in the world; Kovacic, his experience is like incredible…

“So he’s up against all of these players in the middle of midfield and yet, he’s the one that shines, as a 19-year-old.

“As important as his goal was, as important as his passing was, as important as his tackling was, one of the most important things for me was when he went body-to-body with Erling Haaland from a corner, I think it was, and he stood his ground and he was strong as and he didn’t allow Haaland…

“I just thought: “Yeah, I love that’.

“That, for me, I thought, on top of all the other things, I’m giving you the Man of the Match just for that as well as the rest.”

Kobbie Mainoo outshines England teammate and could take his place

Gareth Southgate, the manager of England, is facing some difficulties with his midfield lineup for the Euros.

Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham are the Three Lions’ surefire middle-of-the-park starters, but with Jordan Henderson and Kalvin Phillips sidelined, a slot is now available for someone else.

Many believe that Bellingham should return to the starting lineup in the Euros as the number eight, with Phil Foden serving as the attacking midfielder.

Nonetheless, Kobbie Mainoo’s outstanding display against Manchester City, in which he outperformed Foden, indicates that he is also competent enough to start for England.

Southgate was at Wembley for the final and he would’ve watched Mainoo’s display. We think his chances of starting for England at the Euros would’ve received a huge boost.
