“On a personal note, I’ve been consistent. There’s not much more I can do. It was the aim – to get to 20 goals – but there’s always next season. Has it been a breakthrough? Yes. Signing Watkins was a long shot
United’s interest in the 28-year-old was somewhat surprising considering that the forward had only signed a four-and-a-half-year contract extension back in October.
Erik ten Hag’s side are said to have a rather limited transfer budget and, while they are keen on recruiting a No.9, Watkins would probably have been outside of their price range anyway.
