Kobbie Mainoo has already named dream Manchester United midfield partner amid Joao Neves links

Manchester United has already been informed by Kobbie Mainoo of the kind of player who would make the perfect midfield partner for him. Mainoo became one of manager Erik ten Hag’s first-choice names on the team sheet after enjoying his breakout season at United.

In the FA Cup final against Manchester City, the 19-year-old scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal, guaranteeing United’s place in the Europa League for the next season.

As far as MEN Sport is aware, this summer, United placed all but four of its players on the transfer list. Along with Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Hojlund, and Andre Onana, Mainoo is one of those four players.

If the most recent rumours are to be trusted, Mainoo is expected to play a significant role in United’s future, and the team may also recruit a new midfield player. According to Portuguese reports, the Reds have made an attempt to capture Benfica star Joao Neves.

According to the Record, United’s £51 million offer for Neves was turned down this week. Neves is said to have a €120 million (£102 million) release clause in his contract and is believed to be valued closer to €100 million (£85 million) by the Primeira Liga team.

Mainoo spoke with MUTV back in April regarding his initial experiences playing for United. If United is going to recruit a new midfield player this summer, one of the questions might provide an indication as to what the teenager might seek.

When asked who his ideal United midfield partner would be, Mainoo responded. The 19-year-old replied by outlining why Paul Scholes would be his selection but also providing an explanation for why the lineup would not actually function.

“I’d say, Paul Scholes,” Mainoo told MUTV back in April. “Although there might not be a lot [of]defending between the two of us. But, yeah, Scholes. Scholes – definitely.

“[Because of] everything. His passing, his movement, the way he could finish. His intelligence. Yes, he was a great player.”
