This summer, Manchester United is ready to submit a stronger bid to recruit Joao Neves, a midfielder for Benfica, according to Portuguese daily A Bola.

Neves is reportedly one of the top players on the Red Devils’ summer wishlist as they search for a new defensive midfield player.

According to the Record, the club made a £51 million initial bid for the wonderkid, but Benfica quickly rejected the deal.

United is ‘likely’ to return with a better transfer bid, according to a Bola. Arsenal, a Premier League opponent, is preparing to make an approach for him as well.

Benfica have been holding out for Neves’ £102 million release clause, but the pressure could mount on them to sell for less due to their financial situation.

President Rui Costa recently said that Portuguese clubs can’t survive without sales and he would not allow Benfica to breach the Financial Fair Play limits.

Man Utd need to speed up pursuit of Neves

Neves is one of the most sought-after young midfielders in European football right now; Bruno Fernandes has called him a “excellent” player.

Last season, he enjoyed an amazing entire season with Benfica. The Portuguese won about 60% of his duels and finished 90% of his passes. In a game, he averaged two tackles and more than six recoveries.

The teenager excelled in the number six role as well, putting in a relentless work ethic and applying great pressure. He seems like the perfect replacement for Casemiro, who is becoming older.

Casemiro is being considered by several Saudi Arabian teams. United might be able to sell him for a fair price by taking advantage of the transfer interest. They must take the initiative since Arsenal is equally eager.

The Gunners are also eyeing a potential replacement for Thomas Partey. United can’t afford to play the waiting game for Neves and need to make an improved proposal at the earliest.

Benfica are likely to be tempted to accept a package less than Neves’ release clause. The Primeira Liga giants could also agree on a long-term payment plan for his potential transfer.
