Man Utd forward thanks Erik ten Hag as he announces summer departure

Manchester United’s first outgoing of the 2024 summer transfer window has been confirmed.

Charlie McNeill praised manager Erik ten Hag for letting him “live his dream” and announced that he will be leaving Manchester United this summer.

The striker only played once for the team he grew up with, coming on as a substitute in a September 2022 Europa League loss to Real Sociedad.

After that, he was loaned to Newport County for the second part of the 2022–2023 season. This season, he also started with a temporary loan transfer to Stevenage. However, McNeill’s tenure with the League One team was marred by injury.

He left the team in January and has since played for United’s Under-21 team.

ManchesterWorld exclusively revealed on Thursday that the 20-year-old would leave United this summer, and McNeill confirmed the news a little over 24 hours later.

“Thanks to all the coaches, staff, fans and everyone involved at the club for the best 4 years ever, from joining the club to winning the FA Youth Cup to then making my first team debut at 18,” he wrote on social media.

“That was my dream come true and I will be forever grateful for getting that opportunity and living my dream of playing at the Theatre of Dreams for my boyhood club which I can thank the manager for.

“I’ve made some friends for life and learnt valuable lessons along the way. I love the club and it will always have a special place in my heart. Once a Red, always a red.”

McNeill, who spent £750,000 to join United from Manchester City, a rival team in the area, performed well in the Under-18s but suffered in loan and at the Under-21 level.

Since the club already had Ethan Wheatley and Joe Hugill on staff, it was decided that McNeill would leave after his contract expired at the end of June.

ManchesterWorld is aware that, despite interest from the Premier League, Portugal, and Germany, a Championship move appears to be the young player’s best option right now.
