Man Utd handed Joao Neves boost as Benfica star responds to contract offer

Joao Neves has turned down Benfica’s offer of a new contract amid interest from Manchester United.

This summer, United is eager to sign a new midfield player to replace Casemiro, with Saudi Arabian teams showing interest in the Brazil international.

Neves has been a transfer target for the Premier League team, with rumours originating from Portugal indicating that Benfica has previously turned down a £51 million offer for the player.

The 19-year-old is want to stay at Benfica for at least one more season, and he has a release clause of £105 million, which is the same amount Chelsea was made to pay for Enzo Fernandes eighteen months ago.

According to the Record, Benfica and the player have already discussed a new deal that would boost his income.

However, as rumours about a summer relocation grow, Neves has dismissed that offer. Benfica president Rui Costa wants a price as near to that release clause as possible should Neves depart, although the report indicates that talks might begin at £85 million.

Neves and Bruno Fernandes, the captain of United, have a connection; both players will play for Portugal at the European Championship this summer.

Fernandes, who thinks United should be interested in signing the young midfielder, has already applauded the player’s growth.

However, Neves has received encouragement from fellow Portugal player Bernardo Silva to think about joining Manchester City.

‘It’s not easy. He’s a player who, due to the success he had last season, has many clubs that want him,’ Silva said.

‘As a Portuguese and a player I like, I would like to see him by my side. But I want the best for him.

‘I don’t need to convince him. João Neves is already convincing, with the way he works, with the energy he brings to the game.

‘It will be easy for many clubs to enter the race. Let him make his decision, let it be the best for him. If he continues with this energy, he has a very good future ahead of him.’
