Man Utd handed major Alejandro Garnacho boost ahead of the new Premier League season

Alejandro Garnacho has not been selected to play at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games.

The 2024 Summer Olympic Games get underway in Paris at the end of July as competitors will travel from across the world to represent their country.

Despite boasting some of the best athletes in the world, few Premier League footballers compete at the Olympic Games, often due to fears they could sustain an injury that would rule them out of club competitions.

And this looks to be the same for Manchester United youngster Alejandro Garnacho, who was not named in the Argentina squad for the Games on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old is currently playing for his country at the 2024 Copa America, where he started in the final group stage game against Peru.

But due to Fifa regulations, the winger will return to Manchester United after the tournament instead of travelling to Paris for the Games.

The rules state that players are not mandated to play in two tournaments in one summer.

Furthermore, Manchester Evening News have reported that the Argentinian FA did not submit a request to United asking for Garnacho to play in the Olympics.

Last month, a report in Argentina claimed that the Premier League club had blocked request for the youngster to play at the Olympics, but it is now thought that this was not the case.

Garnacho made 50 appearances for Manchester United last season, only two less than the club’s total games in 2023/24.

Scoring ten goals for the Red Devils, he was one of only two players to avoid injury all season, with Diogo Dalot being the other.

Having started 39 successive games, Garnacho was crucial in the 2023/24 season and therefore, United fans will be relieved to hear that he can meet up with the team for pre-season at the end of July.

Enzo Fernandez was also omitted from the final 26-man squad, after Chelsea refused to permit the midfielder to travel to the tournament.

However, Manchester City forward Julian Alvarez will be present in Paris, but may struggle to play the first games as the Olympics get underway just ten days after the Copa America final, which Argentina are favourites to win.
