Man Utd ‘increasingly likely’ to enter Erik ten Hag contract talks after U-turn

Despite earlier expectations that an announcement over Erik ten Hag’s future was imminent, Manchester United has apparently placed no timeline on when to make the choice.

If INEOS continues to support the Dutchman after the summer, it is also reported that negotiations over a new contract will take place at Old Trafford. It has been two weeks since United’s unexpected FA Cup victory over Manchester City, which came via goals from Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho.

Coverage during the build-up was dominated by Ten Hag’s status, and this has continued beyond the historic day at Wembley Stadium.

Supporters, though, are becoming impatient with INEOS’s lack of direction as they continue to debate whether to remain in the dugout or change course early in their tenure.

The Guardian stated on Wednesday that United was expected to make an announcement over Ten Hag by the end of the week. Although it was said that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS would not continue their post-season review into the next week, it now seems that this is the case.

According to a recent article from the Manchester Evening News, no deadline has been set for finishing the evaluation until they finish a detailed examination of the 2023–2024 campaign.

If INEOS decide to hand Ten Hag the final year of his contract, it is said to be likely that the 54-year-old will enter discussions over a new contract.

That outcome has been described as more likely the longer the review is delayed.

But Ten Hag, currently on holiday, is reportedly just as keen for clarity as the fanbase and other club staff.

If INEOS doesn’t think the Dutchman’s replacement would be an improvement, they won’t be inclined to fire him.

According to the article, United’s new decision-makers are hesitant to make a choice without a clear succession plan, implying that there aren’t any prospects who stand out right now.

It has been claimed that the Red Devils have discussed potential successors in recent weeks, both before and during the season-ending evaluation.

Despite being one of the candidates, Kieran McKenna pledged his allegiance to Ipswich Town by agreeing to a new deal after leading the team to consecutive Premier League promotions.

Highly anticipated contender Gareth Southgate won’t be available until after leading England into Euro 2024, which takes place in mid-July.

Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Frank and Roberto De Zerbi have also been touted as potential targets if United decide to part ways with Ten Hag.
