Man Utd ‘knocking on door’ to sign £56m Chelsea star to bolster key position – report

According to journalist Simon Phillips, Manchester United are interested in signing either Marc Cucurella or Ben Chilwell from Chelsea during the summer transfer window.

Last summer, Cucurella was almost signed by Man United on a loan, but the deal fell through. In the end, United chose Tottenham Hotspur’s Sergio Reguilon. In January, they activated a break clause.

According to Phillips, United is reportedly attempting to sign Blues co-owner Behdad Eghbali as a left-back. They are still keeping an eye on Chilwell, but they have rekindled their interest in Cucurella.

Phillips said: “Manchester United are knocking on the office door of Behdad Eghbali once again as they look to improve their squad and make a number of new signings this summer. Last summer we saw the almost completed loan move of Marc Cucurella to United. This deal collapsed due to Mauricio Pochettino playing him in the cup against Wimbledon.”

“Anyway, I’m hearing that United have reignited that interest in the Spanish left back ahead of a potential move this summer. They like Cucurella, who has interest from other clubs now coming in as well. United are looking for a new left back, and they are also interested in Ben Chilwell. However, that interest for now is a little more tentative due to Chilwell’s injury issues.”

Possible transfer

Mason Mount joined United from Chelsea in a high-profile transfer last summer. Cucurella had the option of coming to Old Trafford on loan, but negotiations broke down following the Spaniard’s Carabao Cup match against Wimbledon. If he had joined the Red Devils, he would have been Cup-tied for the remainder of the competition.

If United makes a run at the former Brighton player, it won’t be shocking. Due to the injuries to Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw, the team has been without a specialist left-back for the majority of the campaign. Due to a severe knee ailment, Malacia has missed all games, and Shaw hasn’t been able to get over his propensity for picking up muscle strains.

Left-back needs to be a more consistent player for the Red Devils. Cucurella’s offensive style of play would be ideal for manager Erik ten Hag, therefore he might be the solution. Cucurella was acquired by the Blues for £56 million from the Seagulls, and they might try to recover the majority of that cost. United will be aiming to get him a smaller upfront payment. Although Chilwell has also been linked to the club, they are unlikely to pursue him given his ongoing injury issues at Chelsea.
