More than Mbappe… former Manchester United man finishes Ligue 1 top of assist charts

Manchester United are blessed with one of the best creative players in the league, but a succession plan is not yet clear.

The fact that Manchester United has relied too much on Bruno Fernandes in recent seasons is one of the team’s biggest problems.

The recent league games Fernandes missed due to injury exposed this, as United failed to score and managed only four shots on goal in 180 minutes.

Exciting youth prospect Angel Gomes was one player who was present at Carrington; he later departed the team on a free transfer in 2020 and stated that the team had not given him a growth plan.

Angel Gomes tops Ligue 1 for assists

After signing with Lille of Ligue 1, Angel Gomes received exactly what he was lacking—a strategy. He spent a season on loan at Portuguese team Boavista before progressively adjusting to life back at Lille.

His best season to date was the one in which Lille defeated Nice to qualify for the Champions League in fourth place, causing current United investors Ineos to suffer a financial setback.

Now that the Ligue 1 season is over, Angel Gomes shared the top spot on the assist lists.

Even though eight assists seems low, it was a total that no player in the French top division could match, not even Kylian Mbappe.

Gomes, 23, is the youngest player to have created eight assists. He managed to do so with a high level of effectiveness, not even in the top 10 in the division for chances created.

Manchester United monitoring Angel Gomes

The 2020 deal that Angel Gomes signed with Lille is still in effect. That leaves him with just one year left.

According to TBR Football, Tottenham, Aston Villa, and Manchester United are all keeping an eye on his condition and advancement.

It’s unknown if Gomes would consider returning to Manchester United; in contrast to the first time, the organization would need to show that Gomes has a definite first team strategy.

Gomes, who made his debut under Jose Mourinho, is still the youngest player to have played for Manchester United. Might he come back to become Bruno Fernandes’ successor in the end? Don’t discount it.
