More touches than Mainoo: Man Utd’s 8/10 “superstar” is now as undroppable as Bruno – opinion

At Old Trafford on Wednesday night, Manchester United overcame Newcastle United 3-2 to halt their three-game losing streak.

The outstanding Kobbie Mainoo opened the score shortly after the half-hour mark, but Anthony Gordon’s goal after the break gave the visitors a response.

Shortly after, Amad Diallo scored his first Premier League goal. Rasmus Hojlund, a replacement, added to the lead in the 84th minute. Lewis Hall’s long-range strike with a few minutes remaining gave the game a cagey conclusion.

The Red Devils performed far better as a team, but some players shone out more than others, with one guy proving to be as unstoppable as Bruno Fernandes.

Bruno Fernandes’ performance vs Newcastle

The Portuguese superstar, who was forced to miss his first-ever United match due to injury last week and Arsenal over the weekend, is back in the starting lineup against the Magpies.

The impact of the United captain was immediately apparent as he, as always, led by example off the ball and assumed responsibility when in possession.

Playing as a false nine the entire time, the 29-year-old’s inventiveness was allowed to blossom thanks to the little break. He completed 70 touches, made two shots on goal, and produced five crucial passes.

After putting the ball in Hojlund’s path for his eighth Premier League assist of the year, Fernandes’ evening came to an end, although there will be some worries because he was substituted with a hamstring injury.

However, although he was absolutely instrumental, the limelight was stolen by another attacker.

Amad Diallo’s stats vs Newcastle

Amad is now receiving his well-earned opportunity to shine in the United starting lineup after missing the majority of the season due to injury.

Ten Hag rewarded the Ivory Coast international, who made his Premier League debut against Arsenal over the weekend, with a spot in the starting lineup last night.

The 21-year-old simply oozed class from the first to the last minute, displaying outstanding decision-making and an aggressive intent.

Amad’s performance received an 8/10 rating from Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst, which is the joint-highest score among the United team, demonstrating just how good he was.

As you can see above, Alejandro Garnacho, who struggled on the opposite flank, and even Mainoo, who had 39 touches, were not nearly as engaged as the “superstar,” as football designer Liam Canning named him, was throughout.

Mainoo’s first goal came from Amad’s ingenuity and drive to succeed, and he also demonstrated his own danger level with four shots, one of which cleared Martin Dubravka.

In addition, the former Sunderland loanee completed two dribbles and lost the ball just eight times while displaying outstanding ball retention and technical skill to sidestep the opposition’s push.

Overall, it’s going to be tough to displace him in the starting lineup after that performance, and as of right now, you’d fancy him to be on the field at Wembley.
