Ratcliffe sets Man Utd on course for signing of amazing Varane replacement at almost half-price fee

According to a source, Manchester United is thinking of making a move for Sporting CP defender Ousmane Diomande after finding out the reduced price they could be able to pay to get him this summer.

Now that they are aware that Raphael Varane has played his final game for the team, Man Utd will make strengthening at center-back their top goal this summer.

In actuality, Lisandro Martinez is the only centre defender they have that is unquestioned about his future, despite the fact that he isn’t always available due to injury problems.

Man Utd is looking to add a defender, and according to information obtained by TEAMtalk, Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite, Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo, and Juventus’ Gleison Bremer are on their shortlist.

They now seem to have entered the competition for Diomande, who has been playing brilliantly for Sporting for the last 18 months and helped Ruben Amorim’s team win the Portuguese Primeira Liga this year.

Diomande has previously been connected to both Newcastle United and Liverpool, but according to a Daily Express report, Man Utd has piqued their interest while the former has cooled.

In order to put Man Utd in a great position to win the fight for the Ivorian’s signature, co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe may continue to speak with Diomande’s representatives.

Diomande has a £68m release clause in his contract, but remarkably, Man Utd might be able to secure a half-price deal.

The report claims Sporting have set their new asking price at £51m, but would ‘seriously consider’ an offer of £35m.

Sporting find replacement for Man Utd target

The Lisbon-based group may profit from the interest in Diomande as they seek to raise money this summer. After all, they’ve already arranged a contract for Anderlecht’s Zeno Debast to take his position.

Ratcliffe is prepared to carry on discussions with Sporting regarding Diomande, who at his reduced price would work out well for Manchester United’s meagre summer spending plan.

Additionally, at twenty years old, he would be Varane’s long-term replacement—exactly the kind of profile Ratcliffe will promote investing in.

Trevoh Chalobah of Chelsea is now included in the equation, as the report confirms that Branthwaite is also on the shortlist. It seems possible that Manchester United may sign two defenders this summer.

Diomande is right-footed, so could take Varane’s place in the squad. Perhaps the other addition could be left-footed competition for Martinez, such as Branthwaite.

In Diomande’s case, talks could continue after a clear decision has been made about Erik ten Hag’s future as manager, the report concludes.
