‘Talks are still ongoing’: United’s soon-to-be-free agent wants clarity on club plans before making contract decision

The Manchester United hierarchy has numerous pivotal decisions to make across all squads as we approach the culmination of the 2023/2024 campaign.

With just one game left before concluding the current campaign, Erik ten Hag’s team may be happy to see the end of the season for the Old Trafford supporters, depending on how they perform in Saturday’s FA Cup final.

During United’s penultimate home game last week, Anthony Martial said an emotional farewell to Old Trafford, while Raphael Varane also stated last week that he will be leaving the team when his contract expires next month.

Determining Mary Earps’ future is a major and ongoing task for the women, as the England star’s contract is also scheduled to end this summer.

In an attempt to hang onto the goalkeeper, United turned down an unprecedented offer for her from Arsenal last year. Now, they run the risk of losing her for nothing, which could be a perfect replica of what happened to Alessia Russo and Ona Battle when they both left as free agents in 2023.

After defeating Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 at Wembley to win the Adobe FA Cup final last week, the Reds suffered a 6-0 thumping at the hands of WSL winner Chelsea over the weekend, finishing the season in sixth place.

Earps addresses contract speculation

Speaking to Sky Sports regarding her future, Earps revealed: “The honest reality is that conversations are still ongoing. I’ve been clear I don’t want to make an emotional decision.

“The beginning of the season was really tough, I felt really upset about things that were being said about me and things that came out that weren’t true. I’ve tried to be professional, keep my head down, work hard, [and] get on with my job, and that’s been hard. I’ve been a punching bag at times.”

“I’ve tried to shoulder the responsibility of the team and the performance and where we fell short this season,” she continued. “That’s what you should do as a leader, and as a more experienced player, you have to stand up in those moments.

“I know I’ve given my heart and soul for the whole season. It’s a tough situation. I’ve asked the club for some confirmation on what they’re trying to achieve, and when I have those answers, I’ll be able to make a decision. It’s up to the club.”
