‘Terrible move’: ESPN pundit says £60m player must really regret joining Man United now

ESPN pundit Craig Burley believes one player will regret his decision to join Manchester United.

After a strong first season under the Dutchman, Erik ten Hag’s team seemed like a team on the rise. After Ten Hag joined, Manchester United won the League Cup and placed third in the Premier League.

Under the Dutchman, United has declined even though they made moves to bring in players like Andre Onana, Mason Mount, and Rasmus Hojlund last summer.

Later this month, the Red Devils will have the opportunity to win the FA Cup at Wembley to cap off a miserable season, but Craig Burley thinks one summer addition will be wishing he had chosen to stay with United.

Burley says Mason Mount must regret Man United move

Although Mount paid up to £60 million to go to Old Trafford last summer, it’s safe to say that the transfer hasn’t yet paid off.

This season, the 25-year-old has only made 19 appearances across all competitions due to a calf injury that kept him out of action from November to March.

When the Englishman has played, though, his efforts have been lackluster as he has only contributed two goals.

Although he hasn’t exactly had the best of success since leaving Chelsea in the summer, Burley thinks that because of United’s difficulties this year, the midfielder will think he made a “terrible move.”

While he hasn’t exactly had the best of luck since his summer switch from Chelsea, Burley feels the midfielder will believe he’s made a ‘terrible move’ due to United’s struggles this season.

He told ESPN: “Mason Mount, obviously he’s had an injury-ravaged season, but even when he’s been fit he looks like who’s like oh my god I’ve just made one of the biggest…

“Not that Chelsea are great, they’re not. But as a player you make a decision and how decision he thought was going to a club that were on the front foot. Whilst he’s been poor himself and he’s been out, he’s got to be thinking to himself I’ve made a terrible move here.”

How many minutes has Mount played for United?

Mount’s injury problems during his first season at Old Trafford have been widely reported.

The midfield player played for 80 minutes against Palace on Monday night, although this season he has only achieved eight starts in all competitions.

In fact, the Englishman has played 753 minutes in total, nine minutes fewer than Lisandro Martinez, who has been sidelined for the duration of the season.

Frank Lampard has said that, having watched Mount battle with a pelvic ailment near the conclusion of his Chelsea career, he was worried about the midfielder’s transfer to Old Trafford.

Despite a disappointing first season, it’s still early days in terms of Mount’s United career and he could yet be playing under a new manager next season, with INEOS weighing up the future of Ten Hag.
