Manchester United’s pulling power remains, despite a decade of underachievement, relatively unmatched.
Dan Ashworth recently learned that the hard way in Newcastle, having jumped at the chance to leave an ambitious Magpies team financed by Saudi Arabia to take a leading role in Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos-driven reconstruction effort. Although not formally announced yet, Ashworth’s arrival appears to be a matter of “when” rather than “if.”
Manchester United continues to be in a strong position in the transfer market. Rasmus Hojlund opted to play for his beloved United over French powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain, while Andre Onana departed Champions League finalists Inter Milan for the Red Devils. Sofyan Amrabat rejected attention from other elite teams, preferring only Old Trafford.
If reports are to be believed, meanwhile, Thomas Tuchel is desperate for the Man United job.
Manchester United the dream for Paul Valere Bassene
Paul Valere Bassene’s own Manchester United dream feels, at the moment, rather more unlikely to become reality.
“If offers are available, it is likely that I will change clubs. First of all, we will strive to finish in third place in the championship and win the CAF Cup. I also want to add more goals in my career.
“Manchester United is the European club I want to play for in the future.”
Manchester United considering different option
In 2023, Bassene, a versatile player with the ability to play both wide and through the middle, joined RS Berkane from Mouloudia, another Moroccan team.
This summer, Manchester United is looking for a right-sided forward, yet they are pursuing a player who is significantly further advanced in his development than the Bassene.
There have been connections with Johan Bakayoko of PSV Eindhoven and Antonio Nusa of Club Brugge, but Michael Olise of Crystal Palace seems to be the top choice to replace the consistently disappointing Antony.
In just 14 Premier League starts in 2003–24, Olise—who is rumoured to be an avid Man United supporter—contributed six assists and ten (mostly spectacular) goals. Olise was safeguarded by a release clause worth less than £60 million.
“I’m sure that the player would be really keen on joining Manchester United,” Fabrizio Romano now tells The United Stand. “That’s 100 per cent guaranteed.
“But (Man United) won’t be the only club.”
