Update: Man Utd now ready to make concrete offer for “elegant” 148,000-a-week player – report

After missing out last summer, Manchester United are reportedly ready to finally make a concrete offer to sign what could prove to be a key reinforcement for Erik ten Hag’s side.

Man Utd transfer news

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is expected to have a busy summer at Old Trafford as he tries to establish himself. The Red Devils are reportedly interested in signing Ronald Araujo and Frenkie de Jong as part of a double attack on Barcelona, and it’s inevitable that these transfer rumors will continue to dominate news reports. Ten Hag’s team would undoubtedly benefit from the addition of the aforementioned pair, but it’s unclear if United will be able to complete both signings.

In particular, De Jong would be a spectacular addition, but discussions would not be easy for those at Old Trafford given that he is only 26 years old and has two years left on his Barcelona deal. Nevertheless, Ratcliffe and company are apparently focusing on a long-term target as a backup plan, with the goal of improving midfield for United this summer with or without De Jong.

After his current Juventus contract expires at the end of the current campaign, Adrien Rabiot will become a free agent, and TuttoSport (via Sport Witness) reports that Manchester United is prepared to make a firm offer to sign him. Naturally, United showed interest in the Frenchman throughout the summer, but a deal fell through, and he continued to play for Juventus.

But this time, it seems like the Premier League’s biggest teams are moving quickly to eventually sign Rabiot, adding a substantial £148,000-a-week salary to their payroll in the process. If the trade closes, United supporters will be fervently hoping that Rabiot can help turn Ten Hag’s team around after such a long wait.

“Elegant” Rabiot won’t solve all of Man Utd’s problems

Rabiot is a free agent, which significantly reduces the risk of the transaction, but he is not a player who will bring about a radical transformation at Old Trafford by himself. Instead of relying just on Rabiot, Manchester United needs a game-changer, a player of De Jong’s caliber. Therefore, rather than being their only purchase in the middle of the park, the Frenchman ought to be the beginning of their summertime expenditures.

Nonetheless, earning the praise of former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris highlights that the Frenchman has shown signs in the past of stepping up on the big stage. Lloris said via The Daily Mail in 2022: “There’s an opportunity for him at this World Cup. It’s arrived at the right time and he’s ready. Technically he’s a very elegant player and he really can help us go far.”

Rabiot’s arrival would be a solid start, but United must ensure that their summer transfer window features more than just the Frenchman.
