Wayne Rooney apologised after pulling out of Match of the Day because of a strange injury problem. The former Manchester United ace was due to appear on the show on Saturday night but had to be replaced on the punditry panel.

Rooney was no stranger to an injury problem as a player. From hamstring strains to groin problems and his infamous metatarsal break ahead of the 2006 World Cup, ‘Wazza’ has suffered it all.


But the 38-year-old probably wouldn’t have imagined he’d still be missing out on showpiece events – albeit as a pundit – because of injury scares after hanging up his boots. Yet, on Saturday evening, that’s exactly what happened.

Voicing his disappointment at missing out on the show via X, the ex-England international said: “Gutted not to be making my debut on the iconic @BBCMOTD show tonight, it’s something I have wanted to do since I was little.
