“We’ll be a laughing stock”: Mark Goldbridge stunned after hearing manager Man Utd could appoint

Presenter Mark Goldbridge weighed in on the rumors that Manchester United planned to replace Erik ten Hag with England manager Gareth Southgate this summer, saying it would be the “biggest joke ever” if Southgate showed up at Old Trafford.

With England, Southgate has done a fantastic job, and his man-management is well regarded because the current group of players all seem to relish representing their country. His lack of trophy collection and his inexperience as a club manager could be cause for concern.

Ten Hag’s future is far from certain after an inconsistent season, with United struggling to qualify for European football in the Premier League while winning no trophies so far. The recent humiliating defeat away to Crystal Palace has cast further doubt over whether he’s capable of turning things around.

Southgate Appointment Would be a ‘Joke’

Man Utd would be a ‘laughing stock’

According to reports, Manchester United and England manager Gareth Southgate have discussed Manchester United taking over at Old Trafford. Ten Hag’s future at the team is currently very unclear, and INEOS is rumored to be a big fan of Southgate’s work with England.

Presenter Goldbridge responded to the news by expressing his shock, saying that if United hired the former Middlesbrough coach, they would be laughed at.

“Not joking. If Southgate is next United manager it’ll be the biggest joke ever. We’ll be a laughing stock.”

It remains to be seen if Southgate can lead a team the size of United, but there is a case to be made that managing England is one of the most demanding jobs in the world. Given his inexperience in club administration, it wouldn’t be shocking if some United supporters thought the hiring was lackluster.

The 53-year-old’s last position managing a team ended in 2009, and the game has undoubtedly advanced much since then. Even though Southgate has a ton of experience leading a Premier League team, managing a nation is a whole different ball game.

Thomas Tuchel Another Target for Man Utd

Talks will progress this week

TalkSPORT’s Anil Kandola reports that later this week, United and Thomas Tuchel will continue their discussions. The German manager has made no secret of his want to return to the Premier League after leaving Bayern Munich at the end of the current campaign.

Tuchel said that he appreciated his time in the Premier League prior to Bayern’s Champions League matchup with Real Madrid, but he would not comment on any possible interest from the Red Devils.
