Why Man Utd owners the Glazers ‘rejected’ Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s choice to replace Ten Hag

Potter was connected to the United position during the 2021–2022 season as the team looked for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s long-term replacement. As the Red Devils’ proprietors at the time, the Glazers had last say over all football-related matters. However, The Athletic claims that because Potter had not managed in the Champions League at that point in his career, the club was not persuaded by his credentials.

Potter wasn’t a total beginner when it came to European football at the time; in early 2018, he had led Ostersunds of Sweden to the Europa League knockout stages, where they lost to Arsenal in the competition despite defeating the Premier League’s top team at the Emirates Stadium.

However, it was evident that the Glazers were looking for someone who had experience in the highest echelon of European club football, and they chose Ten Hag, who led Ajax to the Champions League semifinals in 2019.

During a turbulent seven months at Chelsea, Potter went on to oversee seven Champions League games. He hasn’t had a job since the Blues fired him 13 months ago after a disappointing season in west London.

Potter reportedly had discussions with Ajax but declined the opportunity to take over as the team’s head coach, according to The Athletic.

This season, the former Swansea manager has been linked to teams like AC Milan, Porto, and Feyenoord, suggesting that his status is growing once more. However, if Potter were to receive an interview invitation from Manchester United, transfer specialist Ben Jacobs has disclosed that he might be intrigued by the position.

With Ten Hag having a terrible season in the dugout, Ratcliffe will undoubtedly have to make a major choice at Old Trafford. Potter’s abilities are reportedly greatly admired by the head of INEOS. He may also choose to disregard the Glazers’ assessment from two years ago and bring the English manager back to the Premier League now that he is in charge in the northwest.
